Last night on American Idol the top 12 girls performed and thankfully, they did a much better job than the boys did! Even with the girls that didn't give great performances or had an off night vocally, you could tell they had a lot of talent and potential. I don't think they could have picked worse songs if they tried though. They sang almost every artist that is on the "don't sing on American Idol" list, like Aretha Franklin, Celiene Dion, Chaka Kahn and Bonnie Raitt.
There were only two or three girls that sang songs not by these artists, which will be a big problem later on. So, although their choice in song was not good at all, most of them did an acceptable job!
Stephanie Edwards - It was a good way to start off the night, that's for sure. She had a lot of fun and showed personality. The vocals were not the best but she really owned the performance, which more than made up for her lack in vocals. She reminds me a lot of Fantasia, except better...and without the "yeah yeah yeah"s every three seconds. My problem with Stephanie is that she is too similar to some of the other contestants, but her vocals aren't as good. I do see her making the top 12 though, unless she gets lost in the crowd.
Amy Krebs - "I Can't Make You Love Me" When the song started, I didn't think she would be able to pull it off, mainly because it was not the right song. We have heard it on Idol too many times before and it has been done by better contestants. However, she did do a lot better than I expected her to, in terms of vocals. Her problem is definitely that she doesn't have great performance skills, and doesn't show much personality so her performance fades in away right after it happens. She won't make farther though, unless she really steps up her game. Although Simon once told another Idol contestant that he couldn't remember her, and she went on to be the most succesful Idol alum, so you never know!
Leslie Hunt - "Natural Woman" WRONG SONG!! You do not sing a song that was considered one of a former winner's best performances. You don't especially if you can't even come close to measuring up to it. I don't really know where to start with her performance because it was just bad. The song was too big for her, she looked so uncomfortable on stage and her performance did not match the song at all. I really wanted to like her because she looked like she was a lot of fun, but she did not do great at all and I don't see her making it past tonight. If she does she really really needs to kick it up a few notches!
Sabrina Sloane - "Never Loved A Man" She did a great job picking a song and sang it wonderfully! She showed off her voice, has a lot of fun and that end note was amazing. She was the first girl to really "wow" me tonight. We will have too see how she does next week, but I think she has a great chance at making the top 12.
Antonella Barba - "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" Totally wrong song. It has been done to death on Idol and people really need to stop singing it. At least Idol doesn't have to pay money for new songs this year jeez! Anyway Antonella looked CRAZY nervous and her performance was very forgettable. The vocals were not anything spectacular, but I did enjoy the very end. I don't see her making it to the top 12, especially since many of the other girls are WAY better.
Jordin Sparks - You could tell that she lacked experience but she did a great job. She chose a great song and had a lot of fun with it! Her ending was amazing I really enjoyed it. She obviously has a lot of talent but she needs to show it off better. I hope she makes the top 12 and gets a chance to show it off.
Nicole Tranquillo - The song did a horrible job at showing off her voice but it was something different, which was nice. She could have used the stage more but I kind of liked her. She was all over the place in this performance but I think she has a lot of potential. She's also a lot of fun, which is nice. I don't see her making the top 12 based on this performance, but I think that if she chooses better songs she has a shot.
Haley Scarnato - "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" Horrible song choice, but she does have a really good voice. It was not a "wow" performance, and she really should have picked a better song, but I definitely see potential here.
Melinda Doolittle - "Since You Been Gone" She really owned the song. And I was not expecting that I thought that her voice would be amazing, but her performance would leave a lot to be desired. She really proved me wrong though, and gave the first real standout performance of the season I think. My main problem with her is that as soon as she is done singing all of her confidence fades, and I don't think she can win if she doesn't believe in herself a little more.
Alaina Alexander - "Brass In Pocket" I really like the tone of her voice, but she sounded off something wasn't right. She had fun and it was an okay performance, but she really got lost in the music. She isn't very unique either, so I don't think she will make the top 12.
Gina Glocksen - "All By Myself" I wasn't expecting this from her at all, but she definitely pulled it off. I really liked her last note, no matter what Simon says. I do think she chose the wrong song, but she pulled it off a lot better than I expected her to. She's so fun, and I don't think this performance showed it. She is a shoe in for the top 12 though.
LaKisha Jones - "And I'm Telling You (I'm Not Going)" Wow. I was apprehensive about the song, but wow. She has an amazing voice, and she definitely owned the song, which is very important. I don't picture her winning, even if Simon does. The thing with LaKisha is that this performance was probably one of the top 20 performances on Idol ever, and I don't see her topping it. If she keeps getting better every week, she just might win, but I don't think she can. This performance will probably carry her to at least the top 8, but when you have your best performance the first week, everybody expects you to top it. If you can, that's great, but most likely you are going to start to disappoint people, and they will stop voting for you. I really like LaKisha though, and she definitely has the best voice of anybody this season.
So that concludes my review/recap of last night shows. I'm very glad the girls did such a good job because I was not looking forward to this season very much...I am now. Watch American Idol tonight at 8/7 central to see which two girls and two boys are going home tonight!
